Small Business Recognition Awards

The National Steering Committee (NSC), representing the Small Business Ombudsman/Small Business Environmental Assistance Programs (SBO/SBEAPs) nationwide, in conjunction with the National Compliance Advisory Panel (NCAP), has established the Small Business Recognition Awards for:
Achievements by SBEAPs and the individuals representing them
Small business environmental stewardship
Trade association environmental leadership.
The NSC Awards Subcommittee is seeking nominations for the 2007 awards. Previous winners are not eligible. Anyone may nominate an agency or individual representing the SBO/SBEAP/CAP, small business, or trade association. However, self-nominations will not be accepted. Nominations will be accepted no later than Friday, March 28, 2007, 4:00 EST. Please note that there will be NO extensions to the deadline this year. The awards will be presented to the winner(s) at the National SBO/SBEAP Conference in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, June 17-20, 2007. More than one award may be given, or no award may be given, in each of the following categories:
Small Business Environmental Assistance Program Award
This award will recognize exemplary performance in one or more areas where individuals and programs have contributed their time, created resources and work products, promoted policy advancements, developed program innovations, and established new partnerships to build a strong network of small business assistance. Nomination submittals should emphasize state program leadership or individual leadership.
Nominees must:
be part of a state or territory SBO/SBEAP/CAP
have contributed significantly to the leadership, service, and achievements of the program, and
have developed effective methods or tools to assist small businesses in complying with environmental laws and regulations.
Small Business Environmental Stewardship Award
This award will recognize exemplary performance in pollution prevention leadership, industrial environmental leadership, and community environmental leadership. The nominee(s) must have worked with their local, state/territorial, or national SBO/SBEAP in these efforts.
Nominees must:
be an independently owned company with less than 100 full-time employees
have worked with a local, state/territorial, or national SBO/SBEAP (e.g., received some type of permitting, recordkeeping, compliance/regulations, or pollution prevention assistance from the SBEAP), and
be located either in the U.S. or territories.
Trade Association Environmental Leadership Award
This award will recognize exemplary performance and leadership by a trade association to enhance members' compliance with applicable environmental regulations and to encourage stewardship of the environment. Nomination submittals should emphasize environmental leadership and/or environmental partnership.
Nominees must:
be a trade association that represents small businesses (companies with less than 100 full-time employees)
have worked with a local, state/territorial, or national SBO/SBEAP on behalf of their small business members, and
be located either in the U.S. or territories.
Karen V. Brown Environmental Leadership Award
In recognition and appreciation of Karen V. Brown, the U.S. EPA Small Business Ombudsman, for her many years of outstanding leadership and support of the state small business environmental assistance programs, the SBO/SBEAP NSC established a new award category in 2006 called the Karen V. Brown Environmental Leadership Award. Hereafter, the recipient of this award will be identified by a pattern of providing consistent growth and positive outcomes for the SBO/SBEAPs above and beyond the scope of the normal duties. The recipient will be a proven leader and champion of the SBO/SBEAPs. Nominations will not be accepted for this award. Instead, the award will be determined at the discretion of the Awards Committee, and may not be given annually.How to Make Nominations
Individuals, businesses, organizations, NSC representatives or subcommittee chairs, and SBO/SBEAP/CAP members are encouraged to nominate agencies or individuals representing the SBO/SBEAP/CAP, small businesses, and/or trade associations for the three awards outlined above. Please complete the nomination application and submit it on line, if possible.
Please do not to exceed the word limit of 200 words for each question. Do provide specific descriptions and examples to support each of your responses.
In addition, nominators may choose to submit up to 3 pages of supplemental attachments by email to Phyllis Copeland: copelapt@dhec.sc.gov. Supplemental attachments must be in support of the questions under each award category. Please note in the email or hard copy sent which question(s) are being supported by the supplemental documents.

*Please note that responses must adhere to limits of 200 words for each question. No more than 3 pages of supplemental attachments will be accepted via email. The Awards Subcommittee will disqualify all applications that do not adhere to these restrictions.
Judging
Depending on the number, range, and quality of applications, several or no awards may be presented. Members of the Awards Subcommittee will not participate in evaluating nominations from their state of residence.
Additional Information
The NSC has ten members, each representing the SBO/SBEAP of their states in respective U.S. EPA regions. The NCAP has ten members and represents the U.S. EPA regions. The CAPs represent small business interests from their region.

Other Award Programs
The Small Business Recognition Awards are not designed to compete with or supersede other private and public environmental achievement awards.
