OVERVIEW OF THE REGULATION
Owners and operators of automobile dismantling and recycling yards and
salvage yards face multiple and varied environmental considerations every
day. Environmental issues can arise from the dismantling, storage,
transfer and disposal of automobiles. The environmental issues include
the handling, storing, and recycling of a variety of toxic and
hazardous materials (solids, fluids and gases). Environmental
concerns can also arise when spills or leaks occur requiring immediate
and specialized cleanup.
Since the sources of environmental requirements are numerous and diverse,
many operators may not be aware of specific requirements applicable to
their operations and the materials involved. In addition, requirements
may vary from state to state. The purpose of this system is to provide
yard owners and operators with a source of state-specific regulatory information
and contacts on an issue-by-issue basis. The current version of the
system mainly provides the state contact information for each issue along
with a list of specific concerns and considerations for each environmental
issue.
