Multimedia Subcommittee

CURRENTLY INACTIVE

The Multimedia Subcommittee is one of six subcommittees created by the National Steering Committee resulting from discussions on the future of the 507 programs at the 2002 SBO/SBAP National Conference held in Chicago, Illinois.  In June 2010 at the Small Business Environmental Conference in Arlington, Virginia, the Multimedia Subcommittee was disbanded due to an overlap with the Technical Subcommittee, and three separate Technical Subcommittees were created--Air, Waste, and Water.

Overall Mission
The overall mission of the subcommittee is to explore the status of multimedia assistance throughout the SBO/SBEAP network, develop a definition of that assistance, and consider development of resources to help programs with this issue.

Current Status
We have completed the first two portions of our mission.  In 2003, the subcommittee developed a number of questions as part of an online survey ("SBAP/Multimedia Survey") to find out what the programs are already doing with respect to multimedia environmental assistance and what is meant by the term multimedia assistance.  Our survey results showed that SBO/SBAP staff overwhelmingly agreed with this definition of multimedia assistance:  Multimedia assistance means environmental assistance (compliance and beyond) to reduce threats to our air, land, and water.  We analyzed our survey results in depth and considered the best ways to develop resources to help programs with multimedia issues.  To view survey results in a searchable database, go to www.smallbiz-enviroweb.org/Multimedia/surveyresults.aspx

To complete the third portion of our mission, we have tried to assist programs in becoming multimedia if they want to do so.  To do this, we set up an online Multimedia Peer Center.  To visit our Multimedia Peer Center, go to www.smallbiz-enviroweb.org/Multimedia/peercenter.aspx

In January-February 2007, a survey was conducted to update and further delineate information about which SBO/SBEAPs under Section 507 of the Clean Air Act offer multimedia services, as well as to determine next steps for the NSC multimedia subcommittee to facilitate further multimedia activity within SBO/SBEAPs.  This survey will enable the multimedia subcommittee to accomplish their mission to assess and revalidate the multimedia status of the SBO/SBEAPs, and to develop and share resources to help all SBO/SBEAPs with multimedia issues.  This is ultimately intended to help non-multimedia programs become multimedia and to help others to provide additional multimedia services, if desired.  The information collected has been posted on:  www.smallbiz-enviroweb.org/SharingInformation/surveys/multimedia07.aspx.

Future Plans
We will continue our work of trying to assist programs in becoming multimedia if they want to do so.
